Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been announced as the winner of the country's recent election, reportedly securing nearly 98% of the vote. The election period was marked by significant unrest, with opposition groups and rights activists alleging that hundreds of people were killed in a government crackdown on protests, and that dozens of critics were arrested or disappeared.

The government has denied using excessive force and disputes the reported death toll, attributing the violence to vandalism and hooliganism. Despite calls from activists for the election to be cancelled and for a transitional government to oversee reforms, there is no indication of such measures being taken.

Rights activists and Tanzania's political opposition say the government's killing hundreds of people. This video is one of dozens published by activists that show people who appear to have been killed or injured by gunshots. The political opposition say last week's election was a sham and that more than 800 people have been killed in a crackdown on protests that erupted during polling. Tanzanians, as we are fighting for our country, my friend has been shot dead. Many of those killed appear to have been shot in the head. The internet's been switched off for days. Press and rights groups are heavily restricted. The UN says dozens of government critics have been arrested or disappeared in the lead up to the polls. The activists presented the videos in Nairobi, in neighbouring Kenya, with some connecting from around the region. The police are still firing. From various jurisdictions of Tanzania, the police are still hunting down people, clamping down everyone they see in the street effectively because they just feel like this is the only way to contain protesters. While the government denies using excessive force, it says the opposition are exaggerating the numbers of those killed and injured and that the people on the street are not protesters. When police dispatched these perpetrators of action, of vandalism and hooliganism, some of them now went on rampage of looting, arson and assault to innocent people and therefore the police forces were compelled to use commensurate force. This video shows about 30 bodies in what appears to be a medical facility. The opposition and activists say police have started removing bodies in trucks to unknown locations. The government denies it. President Samir Saluhu Hassan was announced the winner of the election with nearly 98% of the vote and a record turnout reported, even though protesters set some polling stations on fire and few voters were visible at others. Here a woman shouts, Mama Samir, you are killing people. Violence has made protesters more angry. The activists say the election should be cancelled and a cross-party transitional government should oversee electoral reforms. There's no sign of that happening. Malcolm Webb, Al Jazeera.
