Some of the 155,000 people forced from their homes in two Aleppo neighborhoods have started returning. This district, Sheikh Maqsood, is now in the firm grip of the Syrian army. Five days of fierce battles with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces ended with the negotiated evacuation of the fighters. An SDF member wanted to use my house to fire from it, but I told them that my house was unsafe and had been affected by the earthquake. I said, what about the lives of civilians? He told me it doesn't matter. What matters is that we stay here as the ones in control. Shell casings litter the staircase and corridors of Qasim Amin School in the Ashrafieh neighborhood. Head teacher Wafa Zain Aldain tells me the top floor was commandeered by SDF snipers five months ago. And last week, when students were about to begin their exams, the fighting started, so they ran for home. When I entered the school and saw the destruction and devastation, my heart broke. I cried. It's unbelievable that a school, meant to be a place for future generations of children, could be in such a state. The school was on the front line of the conflict until SDF fighters abandoned these positions. I desperately hope the school gets renovated as soon as possible, so my children can return, because I love them so much. Their love for their school is enough. It's like their souls are attached to it. Now while the SDF might have left central Aleppo, it hasn't disappeared. And the government says they've seen the deployment of armed groups to SDF positions about 50 kilometers east of here. And the government says that the arrival of what it calls SDF terrorist groups is a serious escalation, and any military action they undertake will be met with a strong response.
