The conference is organized by Syrian expats and locals trying to bring Silicon Valley innovations into post-war Syria. The event is attracting a number of cabinet members, and it's organized by Syrians in diaspora. When we are talking about SYNC, it's a movement. It's a movement how we are going to bridge the gap between Syrians in Syria and Syrians outside and how we are going to kind of help Syrians here in technology in order to create 25,000 job opportunities, as you know, in five years' time, and at the same time helping Syrians in upskilling and capability build. The modern internet was essentially built with Syria outside it. The country's long history of sanctions under the Assad regime hurt its chances for technological advancement. The failing equipment you see here are but one of the many visible signs of the bygone era in which this tech-starved nation was forced to live. For the 24 years Syrians had internet, their data flowed through outdated and poorly maintained servers like the ones you see around me. This made them, by design, prone to government censorship and surveillance and resulted in low-quality services that never allowed the tech sector to grow or develop. Yet, it seems that the endless hurdles Syrians faced, from outdated facilities to being denied access to services, made them only more determined. Because we have the experience and the knowledge, so the best way to rebuild is to come back and, you know, get your hand dirty and start with something. And that's what we did. In the conference itself, the all-woman panel here shows a face of Syria that challenges conventional stereotypes about the country, grabbing the attention of foreign investors looking into the Syrian market. The technical skills and the agility that people are showing, the resilience that people have adapted to a very difficult situation, now they're putting that together, so both the technical skills and the agility, and almost like an explosive mix, I think the country is really ready to explode from its historical past and into a new bright future. For decades, computer screens were the only window Syrians had to the outside world.
