Sydney, Penrith, and Richmond all recorded temperatures of 42°C, an uncommon event as the city typically benefits from a cooling sea breeze. The northwesterly winds pushed hot air to the coast, causing the city to match the high temperatures of the western suburbs.

Severe thunderstorms developed in southwestern New South Wales, prompting warnings for damaging winds, with gusts reaching 100 km/h on the southern Tablelands. Meteorologists warn that another hot day is expected, with the potential for further severe storms across the region.

I'm sure you know and felt it temperatures soared into the 40s in the West today. Time to bring in our own meteorologist Josh Holt. Now Josh how long is this heat expected to hang around? Well we're expecting some hot weather again tomorrow Sales but what about today? The north westerly winning the battle, the sea breeze just not having an impact and the city was just as hot as the western suburbs. Let's take a look at some of the scenes that unfolded across Sydney today. We hit 42 degrees in Penrith and Richmond and we also hit 42 degrees in the city. Now that's quite unusual usually usually we see the eastern part of the Sydney base it benefit from the north easterly sea breeze through the course of the afternoon which drops down the temperature. It wasn't the case today we actually hit the same temperatures as out west with that north westerly making it all the way through to the coast and beyond. Let's take a look at that heat really ramping up across New South Wales today. We can see that here on the gradient map really originating through the northern and central parts of Australia draining down towards the east coast and have a look at these thunderstorms that have also fired up this afternoon. Now they did start off in the southwestern areas of the state where severe thunderstorms were issued for damaging winds. Since then those cells have pushed a little bit further east. Now we did have a detailed severe thunderstorm warning issued for a couple of cells which are moving northward over the Blue Mountains right now. In fact they were responsible, that's the cluster there, they were responsible for wind gusts on the southern Tablelands at 100 kilometres per hour just a short time ago. So just keep an eye out for those. Anywhere across the Sydney Basin over the next couple of hours we could see these thunderstorms spring up. 30 degrees across today, 38 in Tamworth and we hit a very hot 42 degrees in Wagga. Obviously across the Sydney Basin it was hot from the west all the way through to the east. Another hot day on the way tomorrow we could even see some severe storms. All the details 5 to 6.
