Victims included Swiss, French, Belgian, Portuguese, and Italian citizens, with several bodies arriving in Milan for grieving families. Swiss prosecutors have opened a criminal case against two bar managers, and officials are examining whether safety laws were properly followed. Over 80 people remain hospitalized, and international leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, are expected to attend memorial ceremonies.

Of the 40 people killed, half of them were under the age of 18. Aside from 21 Swiss nationals, victims included French, Belgian, Portuguese and Italian citizens. Now as bodies return home, authorities are demanding answers. Swiss prosecutors have already opened a criminal case against two managers of the bar. In Italy, of course, people are wondering how all this could have happened. What I tell the Italian press is that in Switzerland there are excellent laws, the same as in Italy. We have to know and understand whether at the bar these laws were respected. French President Emmanuel Macron will be among those in attendance at a Swiss-held ceremony for the victims, including nine French on Friday. Meanwhile, doctors across Europe are fighting to save as many seriously injured victims as possible. More than 80 remain in hospital. We have an 18-year-old male patient here. He suffered of more than 20% burn surface and additionally has an inhalation injury. He will need a long rehabilitation and further treatment phase. A tragedy that wreaked havoc in mere moments on New Year's Eve looks set to cause pain and suffering for a long time to come.
