Large parts of southern Europe are experiencing a significant heat wave, with temperatures surpassing 40°C in countries including France, Spain, and Portugal. Major cities such as Paris, Rome, and Madrid are reporting unusually high temperatures, while regions like southwestern France and southern Spain are seeing the most extreme conditions. The Canary Islands are also affected, with hot, dry winds from the Sahara worsening air quality and increasing health risks.

The high temperatures have contributed to an increase in wildfires, particularly in Spain, Portugal, and France. France recently experienced its largest wildfire since 1949, resulting in extensive damage to countryside areas and at least one fatality. Authorities in several countries have issued heat alerts, and the extreme weather is expected to persist for several more days.

Sweltering temperatures bake parts of Europe

This morning we're talking heat waves and wildfires across huge parts of Canada, but similar conditions are also being felt in Europe and they're to no end in sight. We're talking countries like France, Spain, Portugal, all under heat alerts this morning with temperatures topping 40 degrees. In the midst of all of that, Ross Cullen out reporting to us and with us live from Paris. Ross must be a bit uncomfortable there I would imagine. Tell us about this latest heat wave that's blanketing parts of Europe. Yeah, that's right, Heather. Not too bad today. Monday, 33 degrees here in the French capital. But tomorrow will be sweltering temperatures of 37 degrees here in Paris. Also hot in other major European cities, 38 degrees in Rome, 39 in Madrid. And we're also seeing those high temperatures outside the main cities. So if you go down south here in France to the area around Bordeaux, the southwestern countryside, 42 degrees Celsius today, 42 in the low 40s in southern Spain as well. And we are also seeing extremely high temperatures in the Canary Islands off the northwestern coast of Africa. Not only is it hot there, also we are seeing an instance of La Calima, which is a hot, dry wind coming from the Sahara, which is heading for the Canary Islands. And that will then decrease visibility and increase the possibility of respiratory discomfort. So very hot at the moment across Europe, even in London, in the United Kingdom, where they have issued a heat health alert temperatures there in the low 30s. So these high temperatures, Ross, they're also linked to and leading to wildfires in many areas. We're looking at pictures as I speak to you of the situation in Spain. So what's the latest in Europe as far as fires are concerned? Yeah, that's right. These high temperatures, Heather, are leading to an increased frequency of fires, Spain and Portugal. Here in France, we do have wildfires, unfortunately, every summer. Something you don't get every summer is a record breaking blaze. It is now under control. But last week we saw the biggest wildfire in France since 1949. Huge areas of the countryside near the Pyrenees Mountains were left burnt and devastated. Houses and crops and fields as well. Unfortunately, a fatality as well as 65 year old woman lost her life in that blaze. In Italy, Mount Vesuvius, there's also been a fire on the sides of the volcano there, which was closed to tourists. So we are seeing a major impact as well from the fires and these temperatures are set to continue for another couple of days before they will drop down to just the low thirties by the end of the week.
