Around 60 heads of state and government and 15,000 attendees came together in southern Spain on Monday to kick off the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, an event that only takes place once a decade.

World leaders and representatives from over 60 countries have convened in Seville, Spain, for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development. The event, attended by more than 15,000 participants, opened with the adoption of the Sevilla Commitment Document, reaffirming the commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda and addressing the $4 trillion funding gap for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Despite global divisions, the conference marks a step forward from previous international development meetings, such as the Addis Ababa Development Conference and the Summit of the Future. The Sevilla Commitment highlights a collective will among the international community to reform the system and ensure developing countries benefit from progress and development.

Hunger, poverty, climate change and peace. These are among the global concerns that world leaders are set to discuss in a once-in-a-decade conference on global development. The fourth International Conference on Financing for Development opened on Monday in the southern Spanish city of Seville with the adoption of the Sevilla Commitment Document. With the agreement, leaders have found their commitment to implementing the Sustainable Development Agenda, but also to work to close the current $4 trillion gap in funding for the Sustainable Development Goals. And what is remarkable is that in this moment that is so difficult and where countries are so divided, it was possible to approve a Sevilla compromise, a Sevilla commitment that represents one step ahead, both at the Addis Ababa Development Conference and, more important than that, one step ahead in relation to the Summit of the Future just one year and a half ago. And so the question is clear. There is a solid will of the bulk of the international community to change the system in order to allow for developing countries to benefit with the progress and development. More than 60 heads of state and government and over 15,000 attendees are taking part in the four-day conference.
