A young surfer is in serious condition after a shark attack at North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie. The 23-year-old was rescued by a retired police officer who happened to be on the scene.

A 23-year-old surfer is in serious condition following a shark attack at North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie. The attack left a significant portion of his surfboard's tail missing. The surfer, who managed to fight off the shark, caught a wave back to shore.

At the beach, a retired police officer walking his dog witnessed the injured surfer and acted quickly. Using his dog's lead as a makeshift tourniquet, the officer managed to stem the bleeding from the surfer’s leg. The young man was subsequently airlifted to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Authorities have reported that a tagged white shark was detected in the area earlier. The surfer remains the only person who saw the shark. Despite the ordeal, he was calm and able to communicate after reaching the shore. His condition is currently serious.

When a badly injured surfer stumbled out of the water at North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie at around 11 this morning, a retired police officer who was walking his dog leapt into action. He used the lead off the dog as a tourniquet to wrap around the young man's leg and essentially saved his life. The young man was airlifted to Port Macquarie Bay's hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. It's unclear what kind of shark attacked the local surfer, but a tagged white shark was detected in the area just after 7 this morning. The only person that saw the shark was the young man himself, but no, no other people saw it. He was quite calm and he was able to talk to us. He was completely with it.
