A young man has been rushed to hospital with spinal injuries after a minibus rolled into a creek. The vehicle had been hired out for the day and was ten minutes from its destination when the driver lost control.

A minibus carrying 25 foreign students veered off Humbug Scrub Road near Williamstown and rolled down an embankment into a creek. Emergency services responded to the scene, finding that all passengers had managed to free themselves from the vehicle, with only one 21-year-old man requiring hospitalisation for neck and spinal injuries.

Authorities credited the use of seatbelts for preventing more serious injuries. The incident was the first of its kind for the local business that hired out the minibus. Cleanup operations included closing the road for several hours and calling in SA Water to prevent chemical contamination of the creek.

There was people everywhere that were obviously quite distressed with what they've experienced. Emergency services were called to Humbug Scrub Road near Williamstown 45 minutes from the city at around 9.30 this morning where they found 25 foreign students who'd been aboard the bus had freed themselves from the wreck, climbing out the back window. The fact that everyone on board the bus was wearing a seatbelt has absolutely saved lives. A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital. An SA ambulance has transported one patient with some neck and spinal injuries down to the lower McEwen for further assessment. The disaster a first for local business JC Mini Buses which hired the vehicle to a male driver for the day. I'm just really happy that we don't have any more injuries. The passengers were picked up by another company as the clean-up began. The road was closed to the public for several hours before a tow truck was able to remove the minibus from the rocks. The delicate operation lasted more than an hour with SA Water also called in to prevent any chemicals from contaminating the creek. Brianna Boylan, 10 News.
