Stellantis has announced a delay in the production of the 2026 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T electric vehicle at its Windsor, Ontario plant. The company attributes the pause to U.S. auto tariffs and says that jobs at the facility are not currently at risk. Production of other Dodge Charger models will continue at the plant during this period.

The announcement follows a period of uncertainty for the more than 4,000 workers at the Windsor facility. The plant has already experienced disruptions, including a two-week closure earlier in the year, which the company linked to the ongoing trade dispute. Stellantis maintains its commitment to eventually build the electric version of the Charger.

Industry experts note that Canada’s electric vehicle sector is facing multiple pressures, including the expiry of federal rebates for EV purchases. This follows other recent announcements in the sector, such as Honda's pause of a major EV investment project in Ontario. The Canadian government has indicated it is considering options to support the industry, including potentially reinstating rebate programs.

There's no point in spending money building a factory to build a type of vehicle that aren't selling. It just doesn't make sense. The sector is taking a big hit at large. Just last week, Honda announced it's pausing a $15 billion investment in another Ontario EV project. One potential factor, the end of federal rebates for buying electric, says this expert. You're going to see a dip immediately afterwards. It will go up again. He says new incentives and a more competitive market would help. For example, easing tariffs on more affordable EVs made in China. And he says climate policy could become a global priority again. When we're looking at what's happening in America in particular, we shouldn't think of it as indicative of the wider world, but rather an exception to it. The new industry minister says Canada is looking at options, including bringing back EV rebate programs. It is also important to make sure that Canadians are able to have access to affordable electric vehicles.
