After a week of horror and heartbreak, the Premier is seeking a summer of healing. We can have a summer of calm rather than one of division and hatred and protest. Under proposed reforms after a terrorism event, the Police Commissioner and Minister could temporarily restrict protests in specific locations to be reviewed every 14 days up to three months. The opposition wanted to go further. Sydney's had a gutful, Australia's had a gutful and we need to address this. We need protest laws that are available all the time. The Palestine Action Group, which has held regular rallies over the past two years, though has none planned currently, says silencing protest will not create unity or safety. I'm firmly of the view that when we get to the point where you see passions enlivened to the point that it can unleash violence in our community. The first protest declaration could be made next week. Gun reform could take a little longer to action, but would include a cap on four firearms or ten for primary producers and sports shooters. Anyone with more to use the buyback scheme to dispose of the excess. Licensing rules would also toughen with renewals every two years, not five, restricted to Australian citizens and oversight would increase with mandatory gun club membership and safe storage checks before a weapon is purchased, not after. All in all, toughest firearms reforms in a generation. Our community is still vulnerable. Someone could walk down Bondi Beach right now, walk down Campbell Parade with an ISIS flag and they would not be breaking the law. Next week, it could be. They are murderous barbarians. There is no legitimate purpose for displaying an Islamic state or ISIS flag in NSW. The government isn't ruling out further changes, but says right now public safety depends on these ones being backed when parliament is recalled on Monday, though the opposition is calling for the same support as it pushes its own legislation. This is not the time for political one-upmanship. The goal is clear, but the detail is still up for negotiation. Tallulah Thompson, 10 News.
