The disaster has struck during the peak tourist season, compounding economic challenges for the country. The Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency, deployed thousands of soldiers for relief and search operations, and is receiving international aid from countries including India and Bangladesh.

The floods have receded. Some roads have been made passable. But the task of cleaning up from the devastation caused by the heavy rains is only beginning. Millions of people are affected. Many have lost their homes and livelihoods. We cannot live here again. Even the government officials have told us not to stay. Water still flows beneath this land, making it impossible to build or live here under any circumstances. This land has become a cemetery. Rebuilding our lives will be very difficult. We will have to start all over again from zero. The deadly floods have affected everything from land used for agriculture, as well as roads, rail lines, and the phone and electricity network. It's a serious blow at the peak tourist season, a valuable industry for a country still struggling with severe economic constraints. Sri Lanka's president declared a state of emergency last week and vowed to rebuild with international support. Thousands of Sri Lankan soldiers have been deployed, with some helping in the search for flood victims. And international aid has already arrived from several countries, including India and Bangladesh. Much needed assistance for those affected by this latest extreme weather event.

It's a deal described as the beginning of a new path to peace. Leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have signed an agreement aiming to end the long-running conflict in eastern DRC. U.S. President Donald Trump hosted the leaders in Washington, DC.
