A 22-year-old South Korean student was killed at a scam center in Cambodia, with an autopsy revealing death by heart attack due to severe torture. The incident has drawn attention to the widespread use of forced labor in scam compounds across Cambodia, where workers are often lured by fraudulent job offers or abduction and subjected to abuse.

South Korea has responded by imposing a travel ban on Cambodia, except for a government delegation seeking the return of the student's body and the repatriation of over 60 Koreans detained for alleged involvement in scam operations. Authorities have arrested three Chinese nationals in connection with the murder, and international scrutiny is increasing over the role of technology in enabling these operations.

Cells for forced laborers in giant compounds spreading across Cambodia profiting from online and phone scams. Workers say they're often lured by fake job offers or abduction. Torture and murder are said to be routine. The latest victim, a 22-year-old male South Korean student. An initial autopsy showed the victim died of a heart attack caused by severe torture. About a thousand South Koreans are estimated to labor at these centers. A small part of a large workforce. It's known that around 200,000 people of various nationalities are working in Cambodia's scam industry. Online scams targeting the entire world are being carried out from there. This week South Korea placed a total travel ban on Cambodia. The only exception is a government delegation currently in Phnom Penh seeking the return of the dead student's body. And the repatriation of more than 60 Koreans detained in Cambodia accused of involvement in operating the scam centers. The centers were targeted by massive raids in 2022. Since then they have continued to grow not just in Cambodia but Laos and Myanmar where these rescued workers display signs of alleged abuse. Their response has been at best ineffective and at worst corrupt. Demonstrating its acquiescence and pointing towards state complicity in the human rights abuses taking place. A U.S. Congress committee is investigating the involvement of Elon Musk's Starlink in providing Internet access for scam centers in Myanmar. It is very black and white and we need to as a globe become intolerant of modern day slavery. And the result of what you can get these slaves to do that is so destructive.
