The longest bridge of its kind in South Australia is inching towards completion. A 1,200-tonne tram overpass is being rolled into position as part of a major transport upgrade, drawing quite the crowd.

This structure is a key component of the state's $870 million tram grade separation projects and is intended to become a new landmark for the community.

The bridge replaces a previous overpass built 15 years ago, with experts highlighting the necessity of the upgrade to accommodate the $15 billion River Torrens to Darlington motorway. The new overpass also features a viewing platform for residents and spectators, and its installation is a complex process, advancing only a metre every ten minutes.

Built next to South Road, the bridge will replace the former overpass constructed just 15 years ago. But experts say the upgrade was essential to accommodate the $15 billion River Torrens to Darlington project, a 78km non-stop motorway. The old tram structure didn't allow for a non-stop motorway, a non-stop South Road to go through. What we don't want is to have to work around that and then be back here in another few years. It's one of several overpasses taking shape across Adelaide South, but the first to have its own viewing platform for residents and spectators to witness its completion. Pretty cool. I think a lot of people aren't ready to see just the real scale of it. Moving the bridge won't be a quick operation. In fact, it will only inch a metre forward every 10 minutes and won't be locked into place until tomorrow evening. This is a piece of infrastructure that will be spoken about for many years.
