The South Australian Premier and Federal Communications Minister faced a barrage of questions from students in Adelaide's east as teenagers come to terms with having their social media accounts switched off from next Wednesday. I'm mostly just worried about not being able to access the content that I personally enjoy watching. Some people feel like they're worried for it because they don't know what they're going to do. Some people, they just accept it. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube will be forced to block under 16s from using accounts and if they don't, they face penalties of up to almost $50 million. Families were losing their sons and daughters to snap streaks and to doom scrolling. Authorities concede some will likely try and bypass the ban by shifting onto platforms not covered by the laws, but those companies have also been put on notice. It's not okay for social media companies to be investing in algorithms that are deliberately designed to get young people addicted. But not everyone agrees a High Court challenge is underway, led by a lobby group arguing the new age limit goes too far. The ESA government will ask to be heard in the case to defend the law it helped create. And if someone wants to step up to the plate and take us to the High Court, bring it on. The principal here says students caught using social media under the new rules won't be punished and said they'll be given a warning and an education lesson about why the change is happening.
