Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has announced the deportation of South African national Matthew Grutter following his involvement in a neo-Nazi rally outside the New South Wales Parliament. Grutter, a civil engineer, was identified among a group of approximately 60 individuals chanting Hitler youth slogans and calling for the abolishment of the Jewish lobby.

Authorities contacted Grutter to inform him of his visa cancellation, warning that he would be detained and forcibly removed if he did not leave immediately. Despite Grutter having family in Australia believed to be citizens, the minister stated that their situation was considered but the decision for his removal stands.

For more on this developing story, I'm joined by reporter Tallulah Thompson. Tallulah, what does this mean for this man? Ursula, put simply, South African national Matthew Grutter no longer has a legal right to be in Australia and if he doesn't leave immediately, authorities have warned he will find himself in immigration detention before being forcibly sent home. Border Force was late this afternoon contacting Grutter, outlining why his visa has been cancelled. Reasons almost certain to include his role in that neo-Nazi rally outside State Parliament here in Sydney a little over a week ago. The civil engineer was unmasked as one of the 60-odd black-clad men chanting Hitler youth slogans and calling for the abolishment of the Jewish lobby. The stunt was condemned across the political spectrum as vile hate speech designed to divide and inciting discord, the Home Affairs Minister says is grounds enough to cancel a visa. Take a listen. If you're on a visa, you're a guest in a country and if someone's a guest in your home and they just turn up to make arguments and to wreck the furniture, you tell them it's time to go home and when a visa is cancelled, we tell somebody it's time to go home. Now Matthew Grutter does have a family here believed to be Australian citizens and the minister says the impact on them was taken seriously but after weighing it all up, Ursula, the decision stands he must leave.
