Some cities and organizations in the United States have had to reduce the scale of their Juneteenth celebrations after losing financial support from corporate sponsors and federal agencies. The Cooper Family Foundation, which organizes a major Juneteenth event in San Diego, reported that the National Endowment for the Arts withdrew its $25,000 grant, stating the event no longer aligned with agency policies. 

This funding cut has limited the foundation's ability to offer entertainment and educational programming, key pillars of their annual celebration. Despite these challenges, organizers stress the significance of Juneteenth as a national holiday that promotes unity and education about American history, and hope for restored support in the future.

Some cities scale back Juneteenth celebrations after losing funds

Cities like Galveston are able to celebrate Juneteenth on a larger scale. Other organizations they were forced to scale back. This comes after some groups lost funding from companies and federal agencies. One of the impacted organizations is the Cooper Family Foundation, which holds one of the largest Juneteenth celebrations, and that's in San Diego. This year, the foundation says the National Endowment for the Arts pulled its funding because its event no longer aligned with the agency's policies. For more on this, Sidney Cooper Junior joins us. He is a member of the Cooper Family Foundation city. Thank you very much for being with us. Tell us more about how this funding cut is affecting your celebration. Yeah, our celebration has three three pillars. One is that we feed the community. We have entertainment and we have education. It actually the pulling of the $25,000 grant really affected in terms of our event in terms of our entertainment that we're able to provide and then some of the other aspects of the education piece for educating the community we have to scale back. Given that I am, this seems like a given actually, but why is it important in your words to celebrate Juneteenth and hold events like yours? Oh God, my father really started tradition in San Diego almost 60 years ago, so like you know, early 70s, he started to celebrate Juneteenth and early 70s he started to celebrate and part of it was just that it's a part of American history. The Emancipation Proclamation is Independence Day that all communities really had a hand in and in in freeing the enslaved and so he thought that was very important. It always had talked about and fought for a national holiday, and when that came to fruition, that was something like a dream come true for our family, especially with it being recognized on such a national scale for people to understand the history behind it. That was a pass. What do you hope for for the future of Juneteenth celebrations? Is getting funding back the solution? I think it's part of the solution. I think it being a national holiday. I think it's in the national interest of of all communities to celebrate and to acknowledge and recognize Juneteenth as an Independence Day. For in America, it really brings all communities together. Our celebration has all communities. There is no isolated communities that participate. There are actual committee that puts on the celebration for us in the Cooper Family Foundation. Very diverse committee. And so you know diversity, equity and inclusion or diversity just in general is just a. It's really the the power behind America and has been historically. And so to understand that and know how it impacts communities and how we move forward in such a way brings about unity being reminded of the past in order to move forward in the future.
