The Somali community in Minneapolis has experienced heightened fear and anxiety following derogatory comments from former President Donald Trump and recent federal law enforcement activity in their neighborhoods. Community members report a drop in business and attendance at religious services, with some residents feeling traumatized by the increased scrutiny and presence of federal agents.

Local leaders, including Senator Amy Klobuchar and state Senator Zainab Mohamed, emphasized the longstanding contributions of Somali Americans to the city and condemned the targeting of the community. While authorities reported arrests of individuals described as dangerous criminals, witnesses noted that legal residents have also been affected, raising concerns about broader impacts on immigrants and communities of color.

Somalis in Minneapolis fear being unfairly targeted

On a snowy day in Minneapolis, there's plenty of warmth inside the Carmel Mall, a place where the local Somali community comes for camaraderie, as well as a cup of tea and a samosa. Senator Amy Klobuchar stopped by to do some holiday shopping. She came after President Donald Trump put the city, known as a haven for refugees, in his crosshairs, referring to Somalis as garbage, saying he wants them to leave the country. They're a big part of our community. They've been here since the early 90s, and it's one thing to support the prosecution of fraud cases, which I strongly support it. It's another to go after an entire group of people who have been here and part of our lives in Minnesota. Still, shop owners say sales have been slow and fewer people showed up for Friday prayers this week. The Carmel Mall is more than a shopping center. People come here to pray and for child care services. And while many continue to come, some out of necessity, some out of defiance, it's anything but business as usual here. The last couple of days have been very, very traumatizing and re-traumatizing for a lot of elders. The attacks from the White House have really increased fears in our neighborhood. Federal agents have been spotted in the neighborhood. The Department of Homeland Security says a dozen people, described as dangerous criminals, have been arrested. But only five were Somali, and witnesses say many legal residents are being unfairly terrorized. Eighty-seven percent of Somali-born residents here, many who came fleeing civil war in the 1990s, are American citizens, like Zainab Mohamed, who's the youngest member of the state Senate. This is a community that is United States citizens who came through this country legally, who are in the military, who are police officers, who are public servants like myself, who are small business owners, and so they're contributors to this community. And what they see is this is not an attack on Somali people, this is an attack on all immigrants, this is an attack on communities of color, this is an attack on anybody who's on the margins of our systems.
