Somaliland

Somaliland, located in the Horn of Africa, declared itself independent from Somalia in 1991 following years of civil war and the collapse of Somalia's government. Despite not being internationally recognized, Somaliland has established a democratic government, rebuilt much of its infrastructure, and maintained relative stability compared to the rest of Somalia.

The region's port at Berbera plays a key role in serving landlocked countries, and its stability stands in contrast to the continued turmoil and piracy affecting much of Somalia. Efforts to reunite Somalia and Somaliland, including a transitional administration in 2004, have not resolved the division.

Somaliland: Somalia's breakaway 'nation'

Somalia is a country located here in the Horn of Africa. It has the longest coastline on Africa's mainland, ideal for cargo shipping, and its location in the Horn of Africa makes it an important trade route. The country gained its independence in 1960, becoming known as the Republic of Somalia. In the 1980s, civil war broke out leading to the overthrow of Somalia's government in 1991. An opposition group, the Somali National Movement, took advantage of the situation and in May 1991 declared the Republic of Somaliland an independent state. Somaliland has an estimated 6 million residents and runs a democratic government. Somaliland's port at Bebera is important for serving the shipping needs of some of the landlocked countries in the region. Though not internationally recognized, Somaliland experiences relative stability, a contrast to the conflict that continues to engulf Somalia. Taking advantage of that stability, the Somaliland government has been able to rebuild much of the region's infrastructure, which was damaged by years of warfare. Several attempts have been made to end the conflict and reunite Somalia and Somaliland, including the transitional administration that was established in 2004. Still, much of Somalia remains in turmoil. Between 2000 and 2017, incidents of piracy increased along the country's coast, attracting international attention.
