Snow and gusty winds led to major travel issues on Dec. 29, but there's still more wintry weather to come across the region.

A major winter storm is affecting areas from the Great Lakes into the Northeast, bringing a combination of heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing rain. Authorities have issued lake effect snow warnings, winter weather advisories, and high wind warnings across the region, with hazardous conditions reported in cities such as Buffalo and Albany, New York.

The storm has caused widespread power outages, property damage, and significant travel delays, including flight disruptions. Meteorologists warn that two additional rounds of snow are expected, with some areas downwind of the Great Lakes potentially receiving over a foot of snow, while most regions will see 1 to 3 inches.

Let's start off with the alerts. Because this gives you an idea of what the concerns are. What are the impacts? It's wind and snow. Spoiler alert. We take a look. We have lake effect snow warnings. We have winter weather advisories in the gray. The darker blue, those are winter storm warnings. And then all of these tan polygons, that is high wind warning. So wind, snow, bad combination. We talked about the blizzards. We could see snow squall conditions as well. A little bit of a difference there. We've been explaining in some more shorter segments tonight the difference between those. But blowing snow is the headline here. Now, the core of the storm system up into Canada as this moves into the Northeast. One of the reasons that we have additional precipitation behind the cold front that we saw with the rain and the freezing rain. We have had freezing rain reports into places like Albany, New York. So bad combination, ice with snow on top. And then there's the wind, of course, causing power outages. But not just power outages. We've seen a lot of damage as well. I mentioned in the Buffalo area, a lot of trees down reported. A lot of even like roof damage from some of the storm reports. We're seeing the kind of damage you see with a severe thunderstorm warning. We still have the thunderstorm to go with it. It's a different system with that strength of wind. Power outages are slowly but surely being resolved though. Jeff talked a lot about Michigan, New York. You're moving in the right direction. 40,000 plus customers without power. But at one point we were well above 50,000 customers without power. So things moving in the right direction. But I know if you don't have power, it's not moving quickly enough. Current wind gusts at this point in Buffalo, we certainly are seeing improvement. We're at 45 miles per hour. When we've had 60 plus mile per hour gusts there and in Pittsburgh as well, down to 33 mile per hour gusts there. Still at 26 in New York. We're at 22 about an hour, hour and a half ago. The point is here, we've seen flight delays also from all of this. That's the other impact. Horrible timing, I know, because a lot of people traveling this week. It continues into tomorrow, unfortunately, along the coast, 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts. Worse in Cleveland as we move forward here. So expect power outages, the damage, the flight delays, all to continue as we head through tomorrow. Now let's talk about the snow, because we're gonna get two rounds of snow, so to speak, behind this system, actually moving off into the ocean. We have lake effect snow that lingers behind, but then we also have a couple of clippers that are gonna bring some snow as well. You know, Jeff talked a little bit about this into the north central, but let's focus in on the northeast with future radar and clouds. Here's the lake effect snow showers lingering behind Tuesday. Our first clipper moves through widespread snow to Michigan to Western Pennsylvania. Then there's a second one Wednesday, this one more southern and a little bit more widespread, the Ohio Valley through Western New York, Western Pennsylvania. You're going to see widespread snow as well. As far as our totals, most of us one to three, but downwind of the lakes, we're talking a foot plus of snow possible.
