Authorities say officers were storming a house where ISIL suspects were hiding when militants opened fire, killing three police officers. Eight others and a security guard were wounded. The operation that included special forces began early in the morning in the Elmaleh district of Yalova, south of Istanbul. The interior minister said the raid was part of a nationwide operation, with more than 100 simultaneous raids carried out across 15 provinces, all targeting ISIL-linked suspects. The operation was conducted with the highest precision due to the presence of children and women in the house. Five women and six children were evacuated safely from the house, and six suspects were killed after the fighting. Authorities say all the suspects killed were Turkish nationals, and five others were taken into custody. As gunfights spread through the neighborhood, schools were closed, gas and electricity services cut and civilians kept away. The raids come as security is being tightened nationwide. The gunfire started around two in the morning. My grandchildren told me that they could not sleep in their room due to the gunfire, so they came to my room. And then the police announced that there is a curfew and they blocked all the roads. When we arrived here in the morning, the house was on fire, fire brigades were intervening and police were here as well. We do not know anything else. We are also trying to understand. Turkey has stopped up counter-terrorism efforts in recent years, especially after the 2017 ISIL attack on Istanbul's Reyna nightclub during New Year's celebrations, which killed 39 people. Also authorities believe some ISIL operatives relocated to the country after the group lost territory in Iraq and Syria in 2019. Since the attack by ISIL in 2017, authorities have been concerned about security in crowded tourist areas and New Year's celebrations and have focused on dismantling ISIL cells to protect the public. The recent raids come amid heightened security nationwide. Authorities say 138 suspects have been arrested in ISIL operations over the past month.
