And this Friday, the shelter set up to temporarily house them will be closing as the last few families continue to look for homes. Jeremy Hopwood has the story. It began with 99 families. Now it is down to seven. One of the largest fires in Mount Vernon's history is coming to a close as a lesson in community. I was just wow, they survived. And there is no better example than nails and baby. Two red eared slider turtles who survived the Cottage Avenue fire, even though it was weeks before Wayne's family could return for them. Called my daughter, say the turtles are still alive when we move into our new place. You know, it will be a comeback for us. We're not taking life for granted. We still have our families. That's what's most important. The homes elementary school shelter closes on January 2nd. Mount Vernon's mayor, who has made these victims part of her family, looks back on the fire filled with hope. It hits me. The most is the resilience of the families who have been impacted, and I've seen them come together and strengthen one another while there are still families who are looking for places and we have an ecosystem of support. And there is Charles, whose experience with the support he received at this shelter has inspired him to connect with life in a new way. I was surprised in the response of the Red Cross. When I get resettled, I like to become a volunteer work for the Red Cross as well. As Charles leaves this shelter on Friday, he's taking something very special with him.
