The citizens of Seychelles voted on Saturday in an election to choose a new leader and a new parliament.

Voters in Seychelles have cast their ballots in a general election to select both a new president and parliament. Polling stations saw long lines as citizens turned out to vote, with many expressing the importance of capable leadership and addressing national priorities.

The main issues influencing the election include the economy, environmental protection, and the country's heroin crisis. Incumbent President Wawel Ramakallawan is seeking a second term, with his main challenger being former Speaker of Parliament Patrick Hermini. If no candidate secures more than half the votes, a runoff will be held between the top two contenders.

Citizens of Africa's smallest nation went to the polls on Saturday to choose a new leader and a new parliament for the Indian Ocean archipelago of Seychelles. Polls opened at 7am and long lines soon formed outside many polling stations. This election is very important to me because I think we need leaders who are capable and with our countries, it's a relatively young nation, we need to be, we need good values, we need to be aware of our environment, we need to help our young people, so we need good leaders. So I'm glad I voted. Topping the list of voters' concerns are the economy, the environment and the country's growing heroin crisis. All the different parties have presented their programs, so at the end of the day it's a democratic process which is of paramount importance so that they can decide whatever government they would like to see in Seychelles. President Wawel Ramakallawan is seeking a second five-year term. His main political rival Patrick Hermini is a former Speaker of Parliament. If no one receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates go into a runoff.

UN sanctions are set to be reimposed on Iran on Saturday - after a failed bid by Russia and China to delay them. Only four countries voted in favour of the draft resolution.
