These high school seniors from the Mileva Maric Einstein Technical School are preparing for a 70-kilometre walk to Belgrade, where they will join a large student protest on Saturday. For the past three months, they have been blockading their school in support of university students' demands for justice, following the collapse of the train station canopy that killed 15 people in Novi Sad last November. For three months now, these high school students have been spending their days planning protests, organising campaigns, and making banners. But it hasn't always been peaceful. We had a situation where a couple of us were sitting in the school, where a man came and started tearing up the banners. We had about ten of them, and he tore them all off and verbally attacked the students. Since that incident, the banners the students have hung on the school gates have been less provocative. The students have the unwavering support of their teachers, who have gone on strike in solidarity. In retaliation, the government has refused to pay their February salaries. History teacher Ivan Pivnički says that before that happened, the proper legal procedures were not observed. The teachers are now considering taking legal action. Such a decision by the state, according to the existing laws, should be followed by a certain procedure. Disciplinary proceedings should be initiated against people who do not receive their salaries, and based on that disciplinary procedure, it should be determined why that person does not receive their salaries. In the course of that disciplinary procedure, that person should, of course, determine their actions. Since Ivan's wife also works at the school, their family had no income last month. Nevertheless, they continue to protest. Paying salaries is not a reason for us to continue with our work or to stop the blockade. Our stopping of work is a motive for specific civil activism. In Serbia, it is something completely different. Respecting the order of the law and the Constitution, and respecting everything that students ask for. Nothing else. This is how his students feel too. After everything they've experienced, they say they have no intention of abandoning their fight for a better country. A society that has enough self-knowledge and understanding. That we don't have to make connections, that we don't have to join parties. A society that I would also like to live in. A society that has feelings for other people, that cannot be influenced by material things. A society that is not ready to sell its image. To achieve a society like this, the students say they are willing to sacrifice an entire school year if necessary. Because they believe that you can make up for a lost time, but not a lost life.
