Meanwhile, bipartisan discussions continue regarding recent U.S. military actions, with the Secretary of Defense set to brief the Gang of Eight lawmakers about strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats. Lawmakers have expressed concerns about transparency following President Trump's reversal on releasing footage of a September strike, and questions remain about the Department of Defense's leadership.

Senate to vote on extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies

Senate is set to take a long-anticipated vote on a Democratic healthcare proposal this week, which is a key tenet of the deal, that was a key tenet of the deal, rather, to end the government shutdown. But with the measure unlikely to secure the necessary support to advance in the GOP-controlled Senate, an alternate plan has now been presented. So for more on this, I wanna bring in CBS News congressional reporter Torian Small. We'll talk about it. So, all right, break it down, Torian. How will this new Republican-backed proposal work, and does it stand a chance of making it through? Well, Vlad, we should note that there are several proposals in the works right now. We know that the House just rolled out its version of it, or at least a few House Republicans, as part of a bipartisan effort to push through an extension of the Affordable Care Act subsidies that really came to be during the Biden administration during COVID. This would extend those subsidies, those tax credits, until 2027. We also know that there are at least two competing Republican proposals, one by Senator Bill Cassidy, that would pretty much fund health savings accounts, so directly give federal funds to individuals instead of insurers, which is something we heard the president echo. While other Republicans are looking at an extension of those subsidies, but on a shorter time limit. That's because Democrats, especially the proposal that's set to be voted on this week in the Senate, are looking to expand it for three years. For many Republicans, that's just way too much time, and they would like to see some guardrails on that in order to weed out what they're calling waste, fraud, and abuse, Vlad. So I wanna turn to something else, Torian, happening on the Hill. We learned today that the Secretary of Defense will be briefing lawmakers in the Gang of Eight. Lawmakers who make up the Gang of Eight later this afternoon. What more do we know? Yeah, and that's a bipartisan group of lawmakers from both chambers set to talk to not just Senator Hexeth, Marco Rubio, and another member, a top Trump official, to pretty much go through what's been top conversation on the Hill for a while now, which is the strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats. We know that President Trump previously said that he would support the release, the full release of footage from a September strike that we could see on the screen right now, but then reneged on that when pressed by reporters recently. That's caused quite a bit of confusion and concern for lawmakers seeking transparency on both sides of the aisle. This also comes after Admiral Bradley briefed lawmakers in a secure location last week as well about that mission. Right now, we know that that is set to happen, that conversation between Hexeth and other top officials later this afternoon, but there are still questions and concerns about Hexeth's handling of the Department of Defense, and this is just the latest chapter in that saga, Vlad.
