This decision marks a shift from the government's earlier position, as it had not supported the release of extra packages in the Senate earlier in the day.

The government had previously promised 83,000 new home care packages as part of a major overhaul of the aged care sector, but a delay in the start date increased pressure on the existing waitlist, which exceeds 200,000 people. The new plan will see 20,000 packages released before the official start date, another 20,000 by the end of the year, and the remaining 43,000 in the first half of next year.

Eventually bowing to pressure from the Coalition, Greens and Independents, an unlikely alliance. Labor has been dragged kicking and screening. Labor promised 83,000 new home care packages as part of a major overhaul to the aged care sector. But a delay to the start date from July to November only added pressure to the wait list. There's a backlog of more than 200,000 people already approved or waiting to be assessed. For weeks the Government has obfuscated, they've tried to hide the extent of the wait list. The reality is that growth in demand for aged care services is growing extraordinarily fast. So some of the extra packages will now become available earlier, meeting Coalition demands to fund 20,000 packages between now and the official start date, another 20,000 by year's end. The bulk, 43,000 in the first half of next year. We supported the delay of the Act, but we never supported the delay of the packages. We're very pleased that the Government has made this decision. This was a clear backflip by the Government to save itself from further embarrassment in Parliament. Labor reminded that despite its landslide election victory, it still doesn't have the numbers in the Senate. This is not a deal, Prime Minister. This is a defeat. Chloe Boris, 10 News.
