The U.S. Senate has left Washington for a long weekend without reaching a deal to fund the federal government, extending the ongoing government shutdown. As a result, SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans are at risk of running out, and higher Affordable Care Act premiums are set to take effect for many renewing their health insurance.

A federal judge has indicated intervention to prevent hunger, but with Congress not scheduled to return until Monday, the shutdown is expected to continue into November. Senate Republicans cited a lack of progress in negotiations as the reason for adjourning, while the shutdown's impact is being felt across various sectors, including air traffic control.

Tomorrow is the day. The last day for lawmakers to make a deal on funding the federal government so that 42 million of you who rely on food stamps don't have to worry about how to feed your family. Tomorrow those SNAP benefits will run out. But this afternoon, a federal judge saying she is now stepping in to make sure no one goes hungry. Scripps News Congressional Correspondent Nathaniel Reed joins us now live on Capitol Hill. Nate, a judge had some strong words about the stalemate unfolding where you are on Capitol Hill. That's right, Del, and look, that decision from a federal judge might be the last thing preventing that SNAP cliff from taking effect, given that the Senate has left for the week for a long weekend, leaving town just after 2 p.m. today, not to return until after the month of November begins, after which there will be two cliffs that Americans are facing. One, those SNAP benefits could run out in over two dozen states, and two, the Affordable Care Act premiums the Democrats have been fighting for for the past over a month, those will take effect, those higher premiums will take effect for people who go to renew their health insurance across insurance marketplaces in a variety of states. And so pretty much two cliffs that the American people are looking at, the Senate not staying in Washington. You heard my questioning to Senator John Brasso, the second-ranking Senate Republican, the Republican majority whip there. Republicans choosing to leave town for the weekend, saying that they don't believe anything would be different if they were to stay and try to negotiate with Democrats. Other Republicans echoing that point earlier today. Here's Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican from Wyoming. Every week, even we've worked weeks when we were supposed to not be here, we have bent over backwards, voted 13 times to try to open the government with current funding. Staying another weekend hoping the Democrats will come to the table is going to be a waste of time. And sure enough, that was the calculus made by Republican leadership, sending their members home for the weekend. Some Senators, in fact, facing flight delays that we have just learned because of that air traffic controller shortage, which is growing more and more dire by the day, according to the Trump administration, because many of those air traffic controllers not collecting a paycheck from the federal government as this shutdown stretches into day 30. It will certainly go past a month now, into the month of November, with the Senate leaving town with no solution in sight. President Trump is set to return soon from overseas, back here to Washington. That being said, there's no Congress in Washington, at least until Monday afternoon, as Senators apparently are content with this shutdown lasting through the weekend and that snap cliff being hit, along with the cliff that will bring much higher healthcare prices to many Americans due to those Affordable Care Act credits expiring.
