This is Darren Tilly, and much like many Australians, he has a story. Yeah, I've been homeless for about seven years, around Brisbane, Goodner and other places. Yeah, just been struggling. Behind his cheerful smile, he hides years of pain and many Christmases spent alone. I sort of sat and cried a lot and spent a long time on my own. In the same room, Tegan Richardson sat enjoying a beautiful lunch with her three children. I can't afford to take my kids for a beautiful lunch like this. But this experience is new for the family, who have spent years without. Being homeless is tough. You're living in their shadows. So, like, when you're homeless, you could be asking people for help, but they don't want to help you because they don't understand your story. The Salvation Army hosted 500 Queenslanders, just like Darren and Tegan, at a Christmas lunch, all hands on deck to serve a delicious roast accompanied with live music. And everyone who helped was a volunteer. According to recent surveys, half of Australians are worried about how they'll afford Christmas this year. Today's lunch in Brisbane City is designed to bring people together who thought they might sit this Christmas out. The organisation also says it's expecting two million Aussies to need the help from a charity this year. People are making difficult choices about what they spend on rent or utilities or medication or the kids, and so they don't do a special Christmas or don't celebrate the season.
