Now, let's find out how Lasisi Olubomi is redefining royal garments, especially for the Yoruba. Our fabrics, the way we wear them, tell people of who we are. Yorubas do say something that, Once you see a prince, you will know this person is a prince from the way he's adorned, from the way he's dressed. So, if you are a royalty, check very well, you will see the adornments of Ashoki in them. They are mostly layered, they are bulky. While Lasisi also designs contemporary gala suits and dresses, his specialty is reimagining and modernizing traditional outfits. His creations often merge heritage aesthetics with modern tailoring, making them both symbolic and wearable in global contexts. For Lasisi, it's about giving the ancient designs an up-to-date twist. The act of making Oteyokuto into our own luxury is that if we tend to forget what we have, an outsider will tell us our story. So imagine an outsider teaching us what our Ashoki is, because we do not even know the roots of it. We just know that Ashoki existed. So look at this one now. Lasisi's label, Black Adudu, is rooted in the royal lineage of Ijebuland in Nigeria. This is exactly where one of the biggest traditional festivals for the Yoruba takes place, called the Ojude Oba. No wonder local celebrities fall back on him. Today I'm wearing Black Adudu 007, and it's specifically designed for me, for Ojude Oba, to showcase royalty. As traditional fabrics and garments continue to be worn for special occasions, many fashion designers in Nigeria draw inspiration from traditional styles, creating contemporary looks that resonate with both local and international audiences. So, what makes his approach, or garments, so unique? Our approach to fabric comes very unique because we like to own every piece as a person, which is the originality that comes with it. So this one was actually crafted for a horse rider, to show royalty, number one, standing on the horse, and then to show bulkiness in fabric. This is the pants, this is like the dhanshiki in it, and this is like the abada in it. It has a cap. While Western styles have influenced modern fashion, traditional attire remains important for ceremonies and cultural events. But what meaning do ancestral motifs carry for today's generation? What I wear now defines my culture, my place, and who we really are. The ancestral motif and fabrics carry a lot into this generation. So, if we look back at it, let's see, we're young lads of now. If you gather ten young lads, the rest I'm sure you'll see core five, six, wearing as rookie pants. Young lads appreciate royalty, young lads appreciate the bulkiness in what we wear. Me personally, when I wear vintage, right, so I feel more royal, like I feel like a prince. In pre-colonial times, clothing served as a powerful visual language, communicating social status, wealth, and identity. Specific colors, patterns, and fabrics were reserved for royalty and dignitaries. The way we wear our clothing has been redefined. The Agbada's have been redefined in such a way that if you want comfortability, you get comfortability in your Agbada. If you want it bulky, the way we do it back in those days, by adding a bit of aesthetics like the stones, like the beads, you get them now. So, our artisans at Black Heart do play heroes in preserving our designs, in preserving our secrets. If we do something that lasts a lifetime, we do, we create an art that can be kept. We create an art that is of value, then it will not pass, it will last the test of time, and it can be worked on later. We actually have to blend ancient to modernity, because right from time, I am a person of culture. And then to make culture more interesting, you don't have to keep repeating and evolving what we felt are no more interesting. African textiles and fashion have a profound history that dates back centuries, filled with cultural significance, vibrant colors, and intricate designs.
