It will be a rain-filled weekend across much of the Southeast for the end of September, likely followed immediately by tropical moisture.

East Coast of the United States

Meteorologists are forecasting several days of rain and thunderstorms across the Southeast United States. The region is being affected by a stationary area of low pressure and a steady flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to repeated rounds of precipitation.

The Carolinas have already experienced some severe thunderstorm warnings, while the Florida Panhandle is receiving much-needed rain to alleviate drought conditions. The unsettled pattern is expected to persist, with attention shifting to potential impacts from developing systems in the Atlantic as the days progress.

Rounds of thunderstorms to soak the Southeast for days to come

Now, when we look at the country as a whole on radar, you can see there's a lot going on in the Southwest. We're gonna get to that in the big three here in just a couple of minutes, but I wanna focus in on the Southeast, where there's not as much of a severe weather threat, not as much of a flash flooding threat right now. However, what you're seeing on radar right now, that is going to continue the next couple of days. We have this flow coming from the Gulf that's bringing all of that Gulf moisture northward. We have an area of low pressure that's just gonna stay parked over the Southeast for the next couple of days. That's why we have rounds of rain and thunderstorms before we even get to all of the issues from Imelda that Jeff was talking about, or what will become Imelda. So the Carolinas have already really been the focus for today, not in the last hour, so you're not seeing it on the radar loop here, but we have had a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings into North Carolina, another severe thunderstorm warning or two into South Carolina. We are getting rain also into the Panhandle of Florida, which is really where we need it when we think about drought conditions. We've already pretty much wiped out the drought in South Florida. It's really just down to the Panhandle now that we're talking about. So looking at the overall setup for the weekend, we're gonna continue to get rounds of rain and thunderstorms in a lot of the same areas that we have them. Tonight, this area highlighted in green here, all because of that area of low pressure, like I mentioned, and that moisture coming from the Gulf. We're not even talking about the Atlantic just yet. That changes as we look to Sunday. So the timeline of that graphic with the green I was showing you Sunday evening. We look at future radar. We see round after round of rain and thunderstorms focused into the Carolinas Saturday morning. We get more rounds, but then Sunday, we start to see what becomes Imelda show up on future radar. And you can see our attention really shifts from the Gulf to the Atlantic and the rain and thunderstorms we'll get from there.
