So I asked them and they told me that they were stabilizing the building after a section of roof collapsed on New Year's Eve. Shocking parents like Ashley Cooper and Grandma Becky. You see the damage. What goes through you? Um, how do they expect it to be safe for kids? I mean, it looks terrible now. What else could happen? Very much so. I'm scared to send the grandson back to school. The Coopers and other parents were frustrated by an information void from district officials about how this happened or what they do with their kids. What have they been telling you guys? Nothing. Hours later, in an abundance of caution, Superintendent Alvin Garrison called a press conference and announced Latonia students wouldn't return to campus on Tuesday. All other students will report in person and then the entire district will go virtual starting Wednesday. The plan will give the district time to determine next steps. I took the Coopers concerns to him. Why is this the first time we're hearing from you directly? Well, of course, it was the New Year Eve. Garrison says coordinating with experts to do inspections and get answers has been difficult with the holiday, and he didn't want to get in front of the people without answers. What could have been done to prevent this from happening or at least know that there were structural issues in that building? I don't know if I have the answer to that question. I would not want to speculate, he says. Crews from multiple departments are working to find out what happened. As far as the other seven schools go, we normally have. We have maintenance that regularly review the school's walk through tour and make sure everything's okay. And if they see a problem, we try to correct it. Is there going to be an effort to check all of the other buildings in the district? Well, we do that on a regular basis monthly. Now you can't see much of the building is now shored up. Workers here tell me that this stage should be completed with just one more day of work. Superintendent Garrison tells me that they're looking into alternative housing if students aren't able to come back to this school here at Tony Elementary. I'm Sean Delancey WC P o nine News.
