And his government is more determined than ever to defend its sovereignty. China hopes to be ready to attack Taiwan by 2027. Whether it can achieve its goal on schedule is another matter. In a statement, China responded saying no matter what leaders in Taipei say or do, they cannot change the fact that Taiwan is part of China and the demise of Taiwanese independence is inevitable. In a somewhat pointed moment, Taiwan's president also took a not-so-subtle jab at Beijing, quoting China's playbook back at them, Sun Tzu's The Art of War, a fifth century text that says, rely not on the likelihood of the enemy's not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him. The message from the presidency here in Taiwan is clear. Even by China's logic, Taiwan's defense posture makes sense. Puma Shen is a wanted man in China facing charges of secession, risking arrest in any country with an extradition treaty. In Taiwan, he's a member of parliament who helped start a civil defense training school. Courses include first aid, cyber security, hostile environment awareness, and other skills aimed at strengthening civilian resistance to Chinese pressure, exactly the kind of thing Beijing does not want. In reality, it's still very tough for them to take over Taiwan because we are so prepared. Shen says China's information warfare is a serious parallel threat. Right now they're using TikTok and lots of YouTube videos trying to tell our own citizens there are other ways that you can avoid the warfare if you try to have some appeasement. If you talk with China, if you don't buy all these weapons, if you cut your ties with Japan and the U.S., then you won't face the warfare. That's the narrative China is providing right now. Chinese drills in the Taiwan Strait are always big shows of force, but at a river mouth north of the capital Taipei, Taiwanese amphibious units carry out combat readiness drills to protect waterways leading into the city. It reveals what else Taiwan is preparing for. Precision strikes, rapid escalation, and a fight that could arrive with little warning.
