This wedding cake, created by researchers and chefs in partnership with the RoboFood project, has edible robotic bears that dance and a chocolate battery that powers the candles.

Researchers and chefs from Switzerland and Italy, in collaboration with the RoboFood project, have developed an edible electronic wedding cake called RoboCake. The project integrates food processing with robotics and edible electronics to create a unique culinary experience.

RoboCake features dancing bear decorations constructed from gelatin, syrup, and colorants. The bears move through internal air chambers that function similarly to engineered balloons, allowing them to animate when air is introduced.

The cake also includes LED lights powered by edible batteries made from nori and chocolate. Researchers involved in the project report that the chocolate forms the outer layer of the battery, which they have described as both functional and palatable.

The creators of RoboCake suggest that their work is a step towards further innovations in edible robotics, including edible drones. They indicate potential uses for these technologies in food preservation, nutrition supplementation, medicine, and education about robotics and electronics.

The researchers at RoboFood hope that this is just the first course in creating more munchable mechanics, like edible drones, which the scientists say could support food preservation, nutrition supplementation and medicine too. These can become very powerful biomedical tools. Or even just give us new ways to play with our food. It's a great way for people to learn about electronics, about robotics or about all this.
