R.L. Stine, the man behind the infamous "Goosebumps" books, is still adding to his young adult horror series more than 70 years after he began.

Stine, now 82, reflected on his early life in Columbus, Ohio, and his journey from writing joke books as a child to becoming a bestselling author with over 400 million books sold.

Stine's transition to horror was unplanned, sparked by a suggestion from a Scholastic editor, leading to his first teen horror bestseller. He maintains a prolific writing pace, often drafting detailed outlines and starting with a compelling title. Stine has at least four new books scheduled for publication next year, including the upcoming Goosebumps title "What We Do At Night."

Are you excited? Very excited. Oh awesome. For a certain generation, just the name RL Stein triggers goosebumps of late 90s nostalgia. Did mommy read him for the last 30 years? Yes, the books more than 200 of them. The newest like arc of goosebumps that he's currently writing are now slaying a second generation. Any idea how many read? I have read all of them. Oh, the success of the series has made Robert Lawrence Stein one of the richest, most beloved figures in publishing. Yeah, I sold 400 million books, but I had to write 400 million to do it. An unlikely heroes journey that started in Columbus, OH, where we traveled with him last week on a kind of Halloween homecoming tour. Your work has inspired generations of readers around the world. See if this works. RL Stein's own story has been told and retold to the point of myth. I heard you found a typewriter in your attic. I dragged it into my room. A fable crafted mostly by Stein himself. I found this typewriter and dragged it into my was in the attic, but at 82 we found him haltingly willing. Oh my God, with my high school photo to look back with fresh eyes. You know a lot of these stories I've told for years and years. Yeah, do you know if they're still true? No, they're not true. Oh, they're not true, no, but I believe them because I've told him so much. OK, and they're in my autobiography. I read it, you know it starts out where I find an old typewriter up in the attic and I sent this book to my mother when it came out and she's called me. She said we didn't have an attic. What's the matter with you? The typewriter was at your aunt's house. Do you believe there were five of us in this tiny house? The house without the attic still stands on North Columbia Ave. Hello, a woman named Mary Joe Vogler lives here now. You want to come in if you're OK? We're sure, of course, really. How strange instead of an attic, the upstairs had been converted into the kids bedroom by Stein's dad. We stuck our boys up here too until they got too big. Oh yeah, and it was here at age 9 where he started wearing out his aunts typewriter. This was the place it was right here. Yeah, it's right here. Yeah, and I would just be writing. I was just weird kid. I'm there writing every, you know, every afternoon or typing stories. I'm doing joke books. I'm doing a little comics and I'm just be sitting in here. It was his first time back, he told us in more than 50 years. Oh, this is wild. Yeah, any kind of feeling? All kinds. Yeah, give me two of them. Um, I'm very nostalgic for this. And so I remember it was hard. I had. It was a hard childhood. Yeah, it's so hard to be poor in such a wealthy neighborhood. Yeah, I didn't. You know, just didn't feel a part of things. Yeah, yeah. But Stein found his place as a writer. First, entertaining classmates with those joke books, then working writing jobs in New York. For 10 years, he published the kids humor magazine Bananas, then wrote a handful of comedy books. Scary stuff didn't occur to him. I never planned to write horror. It wasn't my idea. I was having lunch with this editorial director at Scholastic, and she arrived at lunch angry with another teen horror writer. And she said, I'm never working with him again. You go home. You could write a teen horror book. Go home and write a book called Blind Date. I didn't know what she was talking about. What's a teen horror book? But yes, of course. I said, yeah, sure. Anyway, this blind date thing came out and it was a bestseller. It was the number one bestseller. I thought, wait a minute. I said, forget the funny stuff. I'm going to be scary from now on. His teen series Fear Street became a bestseller, too. Goosebumps became a phenomenon. They've been written sometimes at a pace of more than one a month, despite Stein's habit of typing with just one finger. I've done 300 books with this finger. It's totally bent. It's totally arthritic. How many more books does it have left? I had to switch fingers, but we don't tell that. I know I'll never forget him. What's never been a problem, he says, is writer's block, having perfected a process of starting with a killer title, then drafting a detailed outline. This is the outline I did for Goosebumps. I just finished writing. It's called What We Do At Night. When you had the title, did you know what we do at night? No, I just start with the title and then I think, well, there's some kids who sneak out every night in the middle of the night. And then I then I thought, and then they turn into crows. And I even put, you know, dialogue in the outline. We never sleep. We meet every night. We're the night birds. And so it's right there in the outline, ready to go. So this would be the time to have writer's block, but you don't have writer's block on the outlines either. Don't say it. Don't say it. What We Do At Night will be out next August. One of at least four books it'll publish next year. What motivates you to keep going? It can't be selling another book. Greed and stupidity. I don't know why I love writing. I still like it all these years. I like sitting there every morning and creating this stuff and writing it. That's why, you know, that's why I keep going.
