The Richmond Police Department released body camera footage and 911 audio on Monday in the police shooting that killed a mentally ill veteran last week.

Richmond police have released body camera footage related to the fatal shooting of Angel Montano, a 27-year-old Marine veteran. Officers responded to a call reporting that Montano was threatening his family with knives. Police say they attempted de-escalation while waiting for less lethal options, but Montano, holding two knives, ran toward officers, prompting them to open fire.

The incident is under investigation by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, and both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. Montano's family has stated he had a history of mental health issues. The police union has called for fair and fact-based reporting, while the family has declined to comment further, having retained legal counsel.

But Montano, now holding two knives, ran towards officers. Police recovered these knives at the scene. Family says Montano is a veteran who has been suffering from mental health issues for some time. Angel, his cousin, telling us last week officers should not have shot their guns. Richmond PD confirms two officers fired shots, stalking and Remick. Their belief at that time was that there was an immediate need for them to go in that there could be somebody actively being harmed. Officer Remick, who has been on the force for less than three years, is already under investigation for a murder of an unarmed suspect and a physical altercation with a suspect. Last year, in the meantime, Chief French reinstated him to active duty in February after a mental health screening, the police union, releasing a statement in reference to the reports of Remick's past, saying in part, we urge the public and the media to review the footage in full before rushing to judgment and we call for fair fact based reporting that respects due process and officer safety. I do hope that there will be some conversation around legislation and laws. To get the people that actually need some mental health. Assistance, the help that they need so that we do not end up in these types of situations. And the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office is investigating this shooting. Both officers were placed on administrative leave. We did reach out to the family in this case and they declined to comment, saying that they have acquired an attorney. Yeah, most of these officers are equipped with tasers, but they were looking for additional less lethal methods that includes sponges and beanbag deployment. They did. They do say that not every car is equipped with this, but that they're strategically placed around the city to hopefully get to places quicker. In this case, that didn't happen.
