The majority of the population had spent several days in fear as hostilities began, but are now attempting to resume daily life, though many shops remain closed and the situation remains tense.

The DRC army and its partners reportedly fled before the rebels arrived, and there was no direct fighting in the town. Red Cross teams have been seen collecting bodies, highlighting the recent violence. Over 200,000 people have fled to neighboring Burundi, with the border still closed, while those remaining in Uvira hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

I have noticed things are coming back to normal The fighting did not happen here directly between the M22 rebels with the DRC army as by the time the rebels were reaching this area majority of the Army from the DRC side and also the partners those who were fighting around them fled already others used just the river not far from here the lake in order to cross in the other side of the neighboring province of Tanganyika, but the majority of them also Made the road toward in the other side of the province where they still have control We were very afraid of the situation But it was fine as we didn't see much the military fled before the arrival of the rebels now We are with the rebels and they are not harassing people. We will see how it will be in the coming days People right now here are saying they want to resume with their life. M22 rebels are in control of the situation here The population are preparing to welcome the officials as the town was captured from the DRC authority We are hoping that the government will find a way to talk with the rebels in order to resolve this situation once and for all Otherwise, we may continue to have battles everywhere in the country This area is very strategic It was the last stronghold of the government where they were leading government provisional government from here and also Coordinating the military operation against them 23, but rebels ended by taking over this town The is also strategic because it's bordering with Burundi one of the partner which was fighting alongside the DRC as well But we have seen since we are here. We have seen Red Cross team collecting bodies here In different avenues here showing also how the situation was very Fragile around here.
