Scientists have captured the first-ever footage of the elusive Gonatus antarcticus squid alive in its deep-sea habitat. CNN’s Jeremy Roth describes the rare encounter.

Researchers have recorded the first-ever live footage of the Gonatus antarcticus squid in its deep-sea habitat. The squid, previously only known from dead specimens or fragments, was encountered by a team from the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Expedition using a remotely-operated vehicle about 7,000 feet below the ocean surface.

The rare sighting allowed scientists to observe the squid's appearance and behavior for several minutes. The team described the experience as remarkable, noting that the footage offers new insights into a species that had never before been seen alive in its natural environment.

Scientists have witnessed this rare squid alive for the first time and captured it on camera. We were on the way to the seafloor to see what was down there, but as we were watching out of the mist, out of the dark, came this long shape and it turned into a squid as sort of the lights finally hit it. And it's completely pitch black down there. Before now, the elusive three-foot-long species known as Gonadus antarcticus was only found dead or in parts. Researchers and crew with the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Expedition came across the deep-sea creature in the frigid southern ocean waters on Christmas Day. This was such a rare gift on this day to be able to see this species that we know about. We found its beaks and guts and things like that, but we've never been able to appreciate its true beauty that was captured by this remote-operated vehicle. A remotely-operated vehicle traveling about 7,000 feet below the surface made the unexpected interaction possible. We stopped our descent just to try to get a good view of it. It came right up to the front of the remote-operated vehicle in front of the cameras and it just paused for a little bit, swam around for a little bit, and it hung out with us for a few minutes. And we were completely, everybody in the control room were just enamored by it.
