Rescuers noted that without intervention, the shark would have likely suffered a slow and painful death. The incident underscores the ongoing threat that fisheries pose to this critically endangered species, as the large female shark was able to swim free once again following the rescue.

A grey nurse shark snared by a hook and trailing a length of wire is about to star in an underwater rodeo. The rope pulled taut, the shark now lassoed. Things went swimmingly in the deep, on the surface not so much. With persistence and patience, the creature was eventually flipped upside down and held in a cradle beside the SeaWorld rescue boat. The obstruction was removed and the shark sent on its way. Without intervention, the animal would likely have suffered a slow, painful demise. Look at the size of it though. As happy and exciting as we are being able to assist, it's still so sad that we even have to do this. These are a critically endangered species and one of the biggest threats to their population is fisheries. This shark, a large female, free to roam and hunt once again. Josh Adsett, 10 News.
