A day after his death at 73, Canadian actor Graham Greene is being remembered for a decades-long career that earned him an Oscar nomination and praised for his legacy of breaking boundaries that paved the way for other Indigenous actors.

Remembering Graham Greene’s boundary-breaking career

By the time we get back, I bet the two of you are the best of friends. Before his big break, Graham Greene played small parts on TV, acted in theatre, and also built sets and worked as a welder, life experiences that fueled his roles. I played a cop in Die Hard with a Vengeance, a prisoner who's about to die in Green Mile. In 1991, he portrayed a character that changed it all, earning him an Oscar nomination. Greene, born to an Oneida Six Nations family, played two medicine men kicking bird in the Kevin Costner-directed epic Dances With Wolves. Greene took the opportunity seriously. I'll be damned if anybody's going to push me off this heap. I'm going to fight as hard as I can to stay there and get more writers, more actors, more storytellers, more film crews, anybody in the technical end to seriously get on board. Film critic Jesse Wente says he did just that. He was a hero of mine, and for someone who was a young person trying to imagine a career in movies and television, there were very few Indigenous role models to look up to at that time. One of many tributes to the 73-year-old, after his manager shared news he died of natural causes Monday. Actor Tom Jackson became lifelong friends with Greene, co-starring in shows like Medicine River. If the director could say, I want Mr. Greene to play a trombone in a big band, Greene would do it. He would do that and do it with such an excellence that it would change the way others look at the industry and at him. Excellence recognized earlier this year, when Greene received the Governor General's Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award. That was a major coup. I thought, wow, why me?
