At the Kishemere transit camp in Burundi, approximately 8,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo have arrived after fleeing violence in South Kivu. Many of these refugees, particularly women, report being separated from family members and losing loved ones during their escape.

Renewed fighting in eastern DRC has displaced around half a million people in and around Uvira within weeks. Refugees describe moving between villages to avoid armed groups and bombardment, with some, like Furahia Maktmayemi, losing multiple family members and still searching for missing children.

When we visited the Kishemere transit camp on the edge of the Rwuzizi River in Burundi, we found 8,000 Congolese refugees. They did not just flee their villages across the border in South Kivu. Some say they left a part of themselves behind. On arrival, we met women who lost their husbands and others say they cannot find their children. It wasn't just one woman's story. There was dozens. So we've been speaking to several women here who say they are still looking for their relatives. They got separated as they fled. Kashindi says... My husband died during that escape. My three children are also missing. The children of my brother and my husband are also missing. Renewed fighting in eastern DRC has displaced half a million Congolese in and around Uvira in just weeks. They speak of being uprooted from their homes, moving from village to village in search of safety while fleeing armed groups and bombardment. Furahia Maktmayemi arrived in early December with her two children. Her husband and the rest of her children were killed in a bombing as they fled. She says she saw their bodies, but she couldn't find her three-year-old daughter. Whoever might have seen her, please bring her here to Shishamere. This is where I am. She was three years old. Such stories are not new in refugee life.
