Adelaide United defeated Sydney FC 2-1 in the first match of the new A-League Men season. It was the first game in charge for new Reds' boss Airton Andrioli. Brisbane downed Macarthur 1-0 to round out opening night.

In another match, Brisbane Roar started their season with a 1-0 victory over MacArthur, thanks to a penalty from Jay O'Shea. The Roar managed to hold on for the win despite Dimitri Valkanis, the coach's son, being sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

We've been working on many things in preseason and training, but to be able to execute them in a football match is really when you start believing that we can do those things. And a Jay O'Shea penalty was enough to get the Michael Valkanis era off to a winning ways with a 1-0 win for Brisbane over MacArthur. That is despite the Raw coach's son, Dimitri, being dismissed for a second yellow card.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
