A highly amplified jet stream is currently influencing weather patterns across the United States, leading to significant temperature anomalies. The Western region is experiencing record warmth, with temperatures forecasted to be 10 to 20 degrees above average in cities such as Las Vegas, while the northern tier faces much colder conditions.

By midweek, the jet stream is expected to flatten into a zonal flow, which will shift the heat eastward, particularly affecting the southern tier with higher temperatures. These changes in the jet stream pattern are resulting in notable contrasts in temperature across different regions.

What we have at the moment is called a highly amplified jet stream. We have building into the Pacific Northwest and then the jet stream that's diving down into the South. That's allowing for this Avenue of Arctic air to spill in. Meanwhile, the heat is building across the West as we get into the upcoming week. We're going to notice a change with that jet stream. In the meantime, we're talking 10 to 20 degrees above average like we talked about for Vegas. And then 20 to 30 near 40 below average for parts of the northern tier. But look at how the jet stream behaves as we get into midweek. We no longer have that Ridge over the West or the jet stream that's well to the South. Instead, it kind of flattens out. We call that zonal flow and that's going to allow some of the heat to start to sneak back to the East, especially in the southern tier, where you're probably going to notice the biggest difference in those high temperatures.
