City officials in St. Paul have confirmed that a ransomware attack is responsible for the ongoing network shutdown, which has lasted for several weeks. The attacker has demanded a ransom and threatened to release data if it is not paid, but authorities report that no data appears to have been removed from city systems so far.

The city responded by shutting down its network and is now resetting passwords for approximately 3,500 employees. Internet-based city services remain offline, but emergency services continue to operate. The FBI is currently leading the criminal investigation into the incident.

We have new details tonight is that cyber attack that forced a full network shutdown for the city of St. Paul enters a third week. The city officials now confirming it was a ransomware attack. Fox 9's So Young Kim joins us in the newsroom tonight after the latest briefing earlier and So Young what can you tell us about what those attackers were actually after? Mayor Melvin Carter says a threat actor has demanded a ransom but says the city has not paid any amount at this point. Mayor Carter says the attacker threatened to release data if a ransom isn't paid at this time. The mayor says there's no evidence from the forensic investigation that any data has been removed from the city's internal systems. As we've previously reported, the city's teams were first alerted of the digital assault on friday july 25th. That following monday, city officials initiated a full network shutdown in defense. The city's chief information officer says the proactive decision may have been key to minimizing any damage. Now, when you hear ransomware, you think, oh my goodness, the systems were taken over, they were never taken over. This was planned, this was controlled. Now, city leaders say passwords of its roughly 3500 city employees will be reset over the next three days. In the meantime, internet based city services remain offline.
