The government states these arrests are part of anti-corruption investigations, but opposition figures, including CHP leader Özgür Özel, allege they are politically motivated crackdowns.

Since late 2024, 16 mayors, including those from major cities, have been arrested in connection with two separate probes. Legal experts warn that the proceedings may undermine constitutional principles, as only opposition figures have been targeted. The government maintains the actions are legitimate, while both sides continue to defend their positions ahead of the next national elections.

Rallies persist as Turkish opposition alleges political crackdown

Another mass rally in Istanbul, addressed by Özgür Özel, leader of Republican People's Party, CHP, as protests grow against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in March. A vocal critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Özel faces charges of incitement and insulting the president and could be stripped of his parliamentary immunity. Unable to win at the polls, Erdoğan wants to eliminate and imprison his rival. Since March 19, we've rallied in Istanbul's largest public squares, even in temperatures of 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. Thousands have come out instead of staying at home. Since late 2024, 16 mayors across Turkey have been arrested, including five from major cities like Istanbul, Adana, Izmir and Antalya, and eight district mayors from Istanbul. The arrests stem from two separate probes, one targeting the Istanbul municipality, the other an alleged nationwide bribery network. In the Istanbul case, nearly 100 suspects were jailed, more than 200 released on bail and 39 freed after cooperating under what's known as the fact of repentance law. We demand the proceedings be broadcast live on state television so that both the allegations and the responses are heard. We have already refuted every single false claim made against Imamoglu, one by one. While experts warn the legal proceedings against the opposition undermine the constitution and rule of law, the government maintains they are legitimate efforts to fight corruption and not a political crackdown. Every stolen penny, every bribe or misused public asset will be held to account by the judge and law enforcement. If you pocket public funds or corrupt municipalities, you will face justice. Legal scholar Volkan Aslan says corruption should be investigated, but adds that there are many reasons to suggest the government is using it as an excuse to oppress the opposition. When we look at the past 20 years, there has not been a single person that was detained or arrested from the government party with these claims. So beginning from the last November, only the mayors and the workers from the opposition municipalities have been arrested. The corruption cases remain a contested area, with both sides claiming to defend the constitution. But with elections in 2028, their outcome could be an important test for Turkish democracy.
