Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken center stage at Russia’s Victory Day parade, commemorating 80 years since the end of World War Two. Putin has surrounded himself by friendly world leaders, such as China's Xi Jinping, to show the West that Russia is far from isolated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin led Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow, marking 80 years since the end of World War Two. The event took place on Red Square, with a large display of military equipment, including both historical vehicles from World War Two and modern technology. Modern armaments featured at the parade included armored vehicles, tanks, and ballistic missiles, some of which are currently used in Russia’s ongoing military activities in Ukraine. 

The parade also served as a platform for diplomatic engagement. Putin was joined by numerous foreign leaders, with China’s Xi Jinping seated as guest of honor. Other leaders in attendance represented countries including Belarus, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, Egypt, Brazil, and Serbia. Several bilateral meetings and agreements were reported between the Russian and Chinese delegations during this period.

Notably, some allies, such as North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, did not attend the parade, and North Korean military representatives were also absent from the event. In addition to the ground displays, the Russian air force participated, showcasing fighter jets currently in service.



Putin shows off Russia’s strength at Victory Day parade

We're right on Red Square for Russia's massive May 9th Victory Day parade and this year it's even more important to the Russians than it is usually because it is 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany and of course the Kremlin's putting on a massive show. However, this is also an important time for Vladimir Putin to showcase some of the friendships that he still has. A lot of world leaders have come here to Moscow. First and foremost among them and the guest of honor sitting right next to Vladimir Putin is Xi Jinping of China. There have also been several bilateral meetings between the two leaders and several agreements that were signed as Xi Jinping was here in Moscow. But there are also the leaders of dozens of other nations who have come here. For instance, Belarus, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, Egypt, Brazil, Serbia and other countries as well. However, there are also some notable no-shows like for instance one of Russia's top allies, Kim Jong-un of North Korea did not make his way here and also there are foreign militaries who are also marching in this parade and there North Korean forces are also notably absent. Now this parade of course is not only a symbol of the victory in World War II, it's also a military show of force and there's some historical military items that are being displayed like for instance tanks that were used in World War II, armored vehicles, guns and cannons. Of course also modern military technology as well, some of which is used in what Russia still calls its special military operation in Ukraine that also involves a lot of armored vehicles, a lot of tanks but then also even intercontinental and medium-range ballistic missiles as well. And of course one of the things the Russians also do is showcase their air force including the fighter jets that the Russians are using right now.
