Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his warning against the planned deployment of US nuclear missiles in Germany. He made the statement during the annual Navy Day parade in Saint Petersburg. Putin accused the West of maintaining a Cold War mentality.

The West alleges that Moscow has stationed nuclear-capable weapons capable of targeting German cities in its Kaliningrad exclave. Putin responded to the US announcement that it will begin deploying long-range missiles in Germany for the first time since the Cold War. He stated that these missiles could potentially be equipped with nuclear warheads and would have a flight time of about 10 minutes to reach Russian targets.

The US declared at a NATO summit that it will start deploying these missiles in 2026, following the termination of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between the US and Russia five years ago. The move is considered a significant escalation in tensions reminiscent of the Cold War era. Putin indicated that Russia might abandon its previous moratorium on the development of medium- and short-range strike systems if the US proceeds with its plan.

Putin delivered his comments as part of a larger military demonstration that included around 2,500 servicemen and approximately 30 vessels. The parade also featured participation from naval forces of China, India, and Algeria, highlighting their military cooperation. This display of strength occurred in the context of Russia's recent defense pact with North Korea and the United States' bolstered military coordination with Japan to address perceived strategic challenges from China and Moscow.

Russia had promised it would not restart production of such missiles as long as the United States did not deploy missiles abroad, a position that's now changed.
