A floating barge off the North Queensland coast has hosted a rock concert aimed at generating social media buzz to a global audience. It's all part of a push to get tourists back to the Great Barrier Reef, recovering after multiple disasters last year.

A unique event aimed at reviving tourism at the Great Barrier Reef took place off the North Queensland coast, featuring a floating barge concert to generate a global social media buzz. The initiative seeks to attract tourists back to the area, which is on the mend following a series of calamities last year.

The concert celebrated "local heroes" as part of a community's expression of gratitude and to showcase the Great Barrier Reef's potential as a prime tourist destination. Described as the best-managed reef on Earth and one of the seven wonders of the world, the event provided a stunning setting for the attendees.

Among the 100 heroes invited was Melbourne social worker Claudia Weagle, who has raised $1.6 million for the Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club. Performances by country music star Lee Kernighan and Brisbane pop trio Shepherd headlined the entertainment, dedicating their music to people whose achievements were being honored at the event.

Held in response to the economic impacts of tropical cyclone Jasper and subsequent floods, which significantly affected the Cairns region, the concert aimed to boost tourism and help recover some of the $125 million in losses incurred. The event underscored the region's appeal as "the country's playground," with hopes of drawing visitors back to far north Queensland.
