Opposition parties have alleged that the election was rigged and have pointed to stagnating economic development during Biya's more than forty years in power. Experts warn that unrest may escalate unless the president initiates national mediation. Demonstrations in several regions and cities have called for Biya to step down, citing concerns over his long rule and health, as well as his frequent absences from the country.

Some semblance of normality in parts of Cameroon on Tuesday, as protests sweep the country following the announcement that President Paul Bier was elected for an eighth term in office. The 92-year-old's win comes as no surprise to many residents in the capital, Yaoundé, and with little likelihood of things changing politically, they are demanding an improvement in their living conditions. Well, what I expect from the president-elect is that he must change the situation of Cameroonians. Cameroonians live in too much poverty. The opposition have cried foul. They believe the vote was rigged. They say voters are clamouring for change after more than four decades of Bier's rule during which economic development has stagnated. Some experts are saying they expect the unrest to escalate, calling on Bier to urgently initiate a national mediation to calm the situation. It seems that this term of office will not be a promising one for Cameroonian society, which has seen protests and demonstrations in many regions and major cities calling on the president of the republic to step down and hand over power to someone else in order to break the deadlock. In office since 1982, Bier has kept his grip on power for longer than many citizens have been alive. His health is also a topic of speculation. He spends most of his time in Europe, leaving governance of the country to key party officials and family members.
