Israel's military chief of staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, has reportedly expressed concerns behind closed doors about the exhaustion of his soldiers, and about the possibility that the Israeli military would be left to govern Gaza. Publicly, he has just said of the Israeli Defense Forces that the culture of debate was a vital part of the IDF's overall culture, adding we will continue to express our position without fear. It will lead to the deaths of Israeli soldiers, and it will probably lead to the death of the remaining living Israeli hostages. This is a plan for a disaster, and the army is against it because they know what it will involve. They know that it will wear the army to the point where it's too thin to be dependent upon to defend Israel's other borders. The army is already exhausted. For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that his country's military would carry out the decision of the security cabinet. That's even if, as the opposition asserts, it's something most Israelis oppose. The people of Israel are not interested in this war. We will pay too heavy a price, both in human lives and in billions of Israeli taxpayers' money. Experts say it wouldn't take long for the Israeli military to take over the remaining territory in Gaza held by Hamas, but that it could take several more years to occupy the territory and to set up a system similar to what exists in the West Bank.
