A group of protesters has scaled trees to hang giant banners at the proposed site of an Olympic stadium at Brisbane's Victoria Park. Geo-engineering works are already underway for what will become the city's largest venue, but a federal ruling could bring the Olympic build back to square one.

Approximately 300 protesters assembled at Victoria Park in Brisbane to oppose the proposed construction of a 63,000-seat Olympic stadium for the 2032 Games. The site is recognized as one of Brisbane's most significant Indigenous locations, and demonstrators highlighted both its cultural and environmental importance.

Protesters argue that new state laws exempting Olympic venues from planning regulations threaten the park's heritage, and an application has been submitted to the Federal Environment Minister to halt the development. Despite these objections, the state government has indicated it will proceed with the project as planned.

It's one of Brisbane's two most significant Indigenous sites, but in 2032, a chunk of it will almost certainly house the jewel in the Olympic Crown, a 63,000-seat arena linked to a National Aquatic Centre at Spring Hill and near a revamped RNA. This morning, though, it was home to around 300 protesters. A master plan a few years ago never mentioned a stadium. The trees are our tribal systems, so as they start to destroy the trees, that is part of destroying our tribal systems. Allowed under new state laws exempting Olympic venues from planning laws. This is disgraceful and shameful, and if they proceed with this plan to put a mega stadium on this site, they will be breaching the host agreement. This is on par with Central Park and Hyde Park. And where the flags of the world will likely fly high. Well, the banners have come down today, but it's not the end of the fight. An application is on the desk of the Federal Environment Minister to halt the build here at Victoria Park. The state government isn't concerned. We're just progressing as normal. We need to.
